Drawing on Walls

Busy banquet rooms, brand new nurseries, or ramshackle city walls: just a few of the well worn spaces with a broadness that simply invites a sweeping brush and paint to bring vitality to its sphere and the people who interact with it. I really enjoy the bigness of a mural, and the way it can create an entirely new atmosphere, or help bring out the one that’s already there.

This kind of work really differs from the careful, meticulous process of illustration. It’s the kind of project that allows me to let loose and get moving, to stretch out and get up on my feet (sometimes 40 feet in the air!). Can there be any better job than one that lets you draw on people’s walls?

Lines & Story

American painter, Harvey Dunn, said that a line said that “the character, position, and weight of an object are in the edge.” Like Mr. Dunn, I see lines everywhere I look. And every one of them- from the sharp shine of a mustang muffler, to the deep crinkle of a grandfather’s smile- tells a story.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve understood the world in terms of lines and stories. That’s why I feel most at home with pencils, ink, and illustration. I love the magic of storytelling, and the labor of precision. I love the careful craft of line after line, revision after revision. I love burying myself in the meticulous shading of a tiny, square inch, and stepping back to enjoy the grand picture of every inch put together.

Lines and story - this is my true artistic passion.

Let’s Celebrate!

Have you ever thought about all that a moment can hold? Our days are made up with hundreds of thousands of them. And while each one may only be a second in length, what it holds in depth is almost infinite. A newlywed couple starting their first dance, for instance, is so much more than a dance. It’s the hands intertwined, saying, “I’m with you, I promise;” the feet in step, saying, “where next? anywhere together.” It’s the family around them, saying, “we are so proud of who you’ve become;” the friends beside them, saying, “we’re here for you.” It’s the band playing, “love is in the air tonight!” It’s the flower girl dreaming, “someday that’ll be me.” And it’s that happy, laughing crowd all around, shouting, “Let’s celebrate!”

This is what I love to capture in my live event paintings. The moment, and all it contains. Whether it’s a wedding dance, a launch party, or all-out rockin’ night of music, your special moments are full of a hundred pieces of life ready to be caught on canvas.
