Artist Charlie Forrester is Memphis born and bred.
There’s no place he’d rather be from. The paint of Big Muddy flows through his veins. Thick and oozing ochre, passion is stuck to the bottom of this guy’s soul like the mud at the bottom of the Mississippi. He was created to create. Forrester’s got stories to tell, and he illustrates those tales that mythologize the human experience simply and striking—trying nail down transcendence with a #2 pencil.
He’s got the grit and you bet he’s got the grind. Drive around Memphis, and you’ll see how hard working this guy really is. Between bites of a wet, pulled-pork sammich at Central BBQ look up at the walls and you’ll see his murals. Lush, intoxicating hues of a Delta dusk with a Crossroads cabin plopped in the middle. Did Robert Johnson once live there? The brown, worn planks trod by phantom feet and a blues tune floats out of one of the painted guitars.
Hit the regional comic cons, and he’ll be there, manning the booth, signing custom illustrations. An affable smile and burly hands may palm you a business card, glossy, and featuring a spritely caricature of his daughter as a wood nymph. Flip it around and it’ll direct you to his Instagram feed link so you can keep up with his in-progress drawing-of-the-week.
Charlie’s work shines the fractal levels of beauty, culture and soul of the Mid-South.
He has pride to be a part of the local art scene and the cultural renaissance that’s currently underway in Memphis. Forrester houses the folk spirit of Mid-South regionalism, but throw that in with the echelons of high-brow excellence. He’s an artist, but there’s not a touch of the flakiness that usually is associated with that title. There’s never been a job taken that he wasn’t proud to sign “Forrester” at the bottom. Excellence and grace shine from his blue-collar craftsmanship. Charlie will wow you with a one-of-a-kind designed, 3-story mural, but he’s not too highfalutin’ to make you the star superhero in your own personalized comic book!
Storyteller
Charlie told his first stories through art.
No one is truly self-taught; Charlie's keen eye absorbed all the rich styles and influences that swirled around him. He reflected them right back—sharpening his pencils on comic book characters and storytelling throughout middle school. His drawing was constant and he paid his dues with drive and desire. Early on he zeroed in on pencil and ink, and displayed himself most proficient at sequential art, comics, and storyboarding.
In college, he ran the courses of figure drawing and anatomy, but majored at the school of hard knocks. There was no money involved then, and even if there wasn’t now, he’d still be creating. Charlie currently creates in Memphis, devoted to his wife and four children.
